There seem to be a mix of opinions on Whole Foods..

Some people call it "Whole Paycheck", others just don't mind and love the place. Me? I like it. I WISH I could afford to shop there more BUT in a way it is motivation to earn money so I can shop more often!

OK...

In an earlier post I mentioned the KICK ASS sandwich deal you can get at Ralph's. Pretty much you can get a small (about the size of a Subway 6') veggie's & cheese WITH avocado, chips and a huge Pepsi (think Super Big Gulp size) for under $5 bucks! NO JOKE. This deal has always been my favorite and so it goes without saying I was happy as heck that I with the though that all Ralph's would have this great offering...

NOPE - DOWNTOWN RALPH'S DOES NOT!

Do not get me wrong, I LOVE Downtown Ralph's (especially the samples of the Vincent cheese) but it am hugely disappointed that they only offer the Boar's Head $7.95 sandwiches. Half sandwich is not even an option, only whole.

I mean, if I missed something - please correct me but I looked over the menu and only saw these pricey offerings that are way too much for me to eat (and pay for) anyway. I am an always have been a 6' girl.

No worries Downtowner's - I am going to write and bug until maybe they crack!

Last weekend I went to check out the artwork of the fabulous Bob Dob at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Feliz...

In case you haven't been, the gallery co-exists with a super fun book and gift store. You step in and to get to the gallery have to walk through all the crazy gift types items to reach the gallery part of the store. This type of layout is genius - no matter how much I tell myself I am only going to look at the art, I always seem to spend abut an hour looking around the rest of the store until I fall into the street with many a bags of goodies.

If you like funky artsy gift type items that span from shower curtains, wallets, books and lighters - this is the place to check out.

In an effort to aid in the control of the feral cat population, a new clinic aptly called FixNation has opened its doors and will offer free spay/neuter surgeries for feral cats.

The practice of trap/neuter/return, commonly referred to as 'TNR', is becoming known as a humane and effective approach at controlling feral cat populations. When practiced on a large scale TNR lessens the number of kittens and cats flowing into shelters thus resulting in less felines being put down. It also helps cuts back on disease and the disturbing 'opera' of the frisky buggers howling while out on the prowl.

The FixNation clinic also accepts tame cats for a low price and offers additional services such as vaccinations and worm treatments.

Clinic operation hours are Monday to Thursday from 7:30am to 9:30am.

Amy's Vegetable Pot Pie

When I was growing up in San Diego, my mom and I loved to go out to a place called the Chicken Pie Shop. It is pretty much a cafeteria type/chow hall restaurant that caters to blue hairs and people like my mom and I that simply LOVE comfort food at good prices. I can't recall the fine details BUT we would both get a pot pie, side of slaw, dinner roll and soda for under 20 bucks...

Since then, I have become a vegetarian and (thanks to the media) a bit obsessed with healthy foods (no msg, no trans fat, not too much salt, not too much sugar, etc.).

I always thought I would have to savor the taste of a good pot pie via my memories BUT then one day, while on a beer run with my Boyfriend, I was browsing the aisles while he browsed the beers and I came upon something that has since changed my life - AMY'S POT PIES

OK, so I have only tried the Vegetable one but my gut feeling tells me the other versions are just as yummy. They also have a variety of other products too - burritos, pizzas, pockets, desserts and much much more....

At this point in time, Amy's has over 88 frozen meals and over 130 products overall. All are vegetarian, have organic ingredients and some are even vegan, wheat free and/or gluten free so there is something for everyone to enjoy!

I urge you to check out the site, learn all about Amy's and then head out to your store and try not just one but a few of the selections - I doubt you will be disappointed!

Design Lofts 2007!

I sent my AWESOME staffer out to check out the Design Lofts event. Here is what he reports:

When I first started college, I basically thought that contemporary art was anything that was being shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Downtown Los Angeles. However, since that time I’ve come to realize that contemporary art extends much farther than the institution of the museum and has an even stronger presence in the independent gallery. Over the past five years, I’ve made an effort to visit the many galleries dotting the Los Angeles landscape in order to expose myself to the variety of artists and styles from every corner of the art world. So when I found out that curator Seth Carmichael was putting together a showcase of the best contemporary art from around the world, I jumped at the chance to go check it out.

Located in the Biscuit Company Lofts’ Supreme Penthouse, and organized in association with LA Magazine’s Design Lofts 2007, Art Loft 2007 delivered on what it promised: great art from current artists in the US, Europe, and Asia. From the moment I walked into the loft, I was surrounded by the art. There were paintings on the walls, sculptures hanging from the ceiling, and even live painting in one of the side rooms. Creativity was in full blossom. However, while there was a lot of good art to see, there were too many other things going on to truly appreciate it. A lot of the pieces were hidden behind PA equipment or tables, and others were displayed in places that were very awkward for extended viewing (such as the staircase). I can only hope that Carmichael noticed this and adjusted the placement of some of the works after the opening.

With all of the work that was on display, a few pieces stick out in my mind as I sit down at my laptop. One, which just happened to be the first piece I saw that night, was Kenji Harata’s Doh Mi Fa Ro So. The painting has a very logical control of form and color and almost seems like it was generated by a computer. The scale and proportions of the composition are very balanced, so much so that that it would be just as successful if Harata had decided to execute it at a different scale. Another work that I enjoyed was Justin Lyons’ Arise. Here, Lyons uses a variety of materials and a simple color palette to create a piece that is at once stark yet inspirational. Perhaps it is the central character’s gaze beyond the barbed wire in front of him, but when I think of Arise, I can’t help but be motivated to do something great. The last work worth mentioning is Memory Palace: The Element of Crime by Birgette Moos. Now, I’m not sure if this was part of a series because there were many similar paintings around the loft, but this was the only one to have an ID tag next to it. In short, her painting(s) reminded me very much of the work of Rothko, but with much more mood. If Rothko blurred the boundaries between edge and frame, Moos takes that idea and explores the ideas of revealing and concealing these elements.

In addition to the art on display in the Supreme Penthouse, LA Magazine invited some designers to display their interpretation of what it meant to live in a loft in Downtown as part of the Design Lofts 2007 show. While the designs were based primarily on quirky wall coverings and custom furniture, the real show stoppers were the original details of the building itself, such as hardwood floors, copper windows, and exposed brick walls. I would have liked to have seen the regular lofts and compare them to the penthouses, but I gathered that they share the same sense of mixing the rawness of the old building with the updates of the new construction.

All in all, Art Loft 2007 was worth the visit, but I’d definitely want to make a second trip down there to really take in the art, especially from those artists to whom I was introduced for the first time. The penthouse is fantastic and I’m sure it would look even better with natural light flooding the quadruple height space. My advice would be to spend one cycle looking at the art and one cycle looking at the loft. Take your time to see how the light changes as you move up through the penthouse and how the placement of the art affects your experience of the space.

So, I've done Subway, Togo's, Quizno's and the best deal for the buck I have found thus far is the deli at Ralphs. Yep, your local grocery has a pretty decent deli that has a hefty sandwich for a decent price. Now, I am a veggie so I don't get the meaty type sandwiches but I would think that the prices on those are just as good as they are for my yummy veggie sandwich.

(PS the question in the title of this post is a reference to Friends!)

Most people know that buying a new car can be a NIGHTMARE.

Scary prices, frightening long commitments, high strung sales people and everything else can be enough to make the most Zen person take a trip to stressville!

If you are in the market and looking for a great car - you need to take a trip South to Honda of Mission Valley in San Diego.

I recently did a bit of business there and I felt no pressure to add on anything, to extend my warranty or to get the fancy car vs the car I really want and can afford.

I am originally from San Diego, I actually got my 1st car from them. After looking around in LA I found the dealers here have slightly higher prices and the staff were mainly smooth talkers. With that, I quickly took myself back to San Diego and drove off the lot with a new car and a big smile!

First off, let me say this - I am and always have been a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf girl. LOVE their lattes. LOVE their Ice Blended Vanilla with an extra shot, no whip. LOVE the blueberry pomegranate Iced Blended, no whip.

My move from Hollywood (where I had a CB&TL within 5 mile of any direction of me) to Downtown LA was rough in many ways but the suckiest thing was the lack of a Coffee Bean. Yes, there is one in the cluster of the buildings but if one can find parking there they need to also pick up a lotto ticket as it is a lucky day for them. The other CB&TL is many, many miles East.

With that, I have been cheating on my love with Groundwork.

I have yet to bring myself to try the iced blendeds BUT I can say I do love my new mistresses' Tiger Iced Chai. DAMN! It's good, and I can't get enough. Sometimes I ask for very little ice so that I can have a few more ounces of this liquid heaven. YUMMMM!

There was a time when I spent much of my life in a cubicle.

The perk - I was making money.

The downside - I was in a cubicle all day so didn't have much time to spend it.

Soaking in a hot tub is good BUT now it can be Hella Good if you have the right salts and suds! Dry Skin? Not a problem, try the Birthday Suit Cake Frosting which has a shea oil and glycerin combo that'll have your skin as soft as the day you were born. If you want to take it a step further and go for the Soft Skin Gold Medal try the Hottie Pants Caramel and Vanilla Pudding scrub. It is super creamy and smells like vanilla pudding...need we say more?!?! Actualy, yes, there is a bit more to say which is that all these products are reasonably priced, made by hand AND cruelty-free!!!

There are many reasons you need to take a trip out to Back Door Bakery in Silverlake but the one that tops the list is certainly the hash browns. Let's not forget to mention the croissants, muffins, cupcakes, cookies which are fabulous and fresh or the fact that they make all their condiments themselves. It's a little small, often crowded but it is a small price to pay for such magical potatoes and don't forget to bring your dog as they more than welcome that!
